Learning and communicating in two languages

Language comes to life when children use it.

At Riverside, Russian and English are used in different learning programmes. We help families understand how each programme works and what support their child may need.

Russian and British programmes: how they complement each other

Riverside’s dual programme combines Russian academic learning with British curriculum study through English. In English, Maths and Science, pupils use language to read, solve problems, discuss ideas and explain their thinking. Subjects, teaching languages and workload vary by class.

Three programme formats — what is different?

Russian FGOS programme

Role of English
Foreign-language study within the chosen timetable.

What to confirm
Subjects, hours and availability for the particular class.

Russian programme with enhanced English

Role of English
Additional emphasis on learning English as a language.

What to confirm
Lesson allocation and intended learning outcomes.

Dual Russian and British programme

Role of English
English is also used to study British curriculum subjects.

What to confirm
English-medium subjects, workload and support.

The availability and content of each format should be confirmed for the particular age and class. Enhanced English and subject learning through English are not the same offer.

In Nursery

Songs, stories, games, creative activities and everyday conversation introduce children to English through meaningful experiences.

In primary and secondary school

Primary · KS1–KS2; Secondary · KS3; Secondary · KS4.

Riverside offers Russian and British educational pathways. We discuss the curriculum, subjects, teaching languages and workload for the selected class, taking account of age, previous learning and the family’s goals.

Every child has a different starting point

Age, previous learning and language experience help us identify an appropriate class. We discuss the curriculum and arrangements for additional support before enrolment.

Support for learning

Tell us which languages your child speaks at home and uses at school. We offer ESL (English as a Second Language) and/or one-to-one assistance. Learning goals, format, timetable and terms are agreed with the family according to the child’s needs.

Questions to bring to your visit

Which language is used for each subject? How well does your child understand instructions? What support can be arranged? How will the family and teacher discuss progress? Children develop language skills at different rates.

Parents’ questions about the two programmes

How does the dual programme differ from enhanced English?

Enhanced English primarily develops language skills. In a dual programme, English is also a language for subject learning: pupils read tasks, discuss solutions and explain observations. Riverside’s British programme includes English, Maths and Science; the subjects and lesson allocation should be confirmed for the chosen class.

Will my child study the same topic twice?

Some topics overlap. Revisiting them can help pupils consolidate understanding, develop vocabulary or apply a concept in a new task. When choosing a class, look at how topics and assignments are organised and at the child’s total workload.

Which language is used for each subject?

In the dual programme, subject learning takes place in Russian and English. The particular subjects, teaching languages and lesson allocation should be confirmed for the chosen class. Ask to see the curriculum and timetable: the overall programme name does not describe every subject.

What if my child needs more English for subject learning?

Subject lessons involve understanding instructions, reading questions and explaining answers. Tell Riverside about your child’s previous learning so that EAL/ESL or individual support can be discussed. The format, timetable and terms are agreed separately; admission depends on programme requirements and the child’s needs.

How is the right class identified?

British Years and Russian classes cannot be matched by number alone. Age, previous curriculum and language readiness all matter. The appropriate stage and admission arrangements are discussed individually with the family.

Which stages are current and which are planned?

Current provision includes Nursery, Primary KS1–KS2, Secondary KS3 and Secondary KS4. Reception belongs to EYFS. The ages 3–18 pathway includes a planned 16–18 stage: Russian Grades 10–11 and Sixth Form. Admissions for ages 16–18 are not yet open. The opening year, programmes and admission arrangements will be announced separately; examination and progression arrangements should be checked for the particular programme.
